I get asked, why impeach at this time, as the election will be soon. Isn’t it too late to make a difference?
Answer: The Executive branch of Government is always grabbing all of the power it can. When George W. Bush and Dick Cheney leave office the next President will enter office with the power that the Executive has now and start from there. The Executive branch already has much more power than the Founders intended. The balance of power in our country is not in line and won’t be until someone challenges the President.
Question: Are there any grounds for Impeachment?
Answer: Both Bush and Cheney have committed crimes that not only are grounds for Impeachment, but many say that they have committed treason (a crime punishable by death); no one offered such accusations against Richard Nixon (it is my opinion, that if Nixon were here today, he would not be Impeached either).
Question: Will Government stop if the Senate tries for Impeachment?
Answer: First, there would have to be an investigation by the Congress. The Congress would appoint a committee to investigate. If the committee were to find grounds for Impeachment and the evidence to support those accusations, then the Senate would try the accused. There is no need to shut down the Government. It was not shut down for Nixon or the trial of Clinton.
Question: Would trying the President for Impeachment look like a vindictive measure and go bad on the Democrats in the next Election?
Answer: Historically, that has not been the case. After Nixon, the Democrats took power. After Clinton, the Republicans took power.
One of the things I often hear is that Democrats have no strength and won’t stand up the Republicans. People don’t want to vote for leaders they think are powerless.
If we want a true Democracy, we need to take a stand. Democracy is a participatory form of government. If the populace is not participating, government is run by a very few. There is no Democracy and those who don’t speak for themselves are not represented. I urge you to take this opportunity to participate and encourage your friends to do the same.
